Edinburgh College of Art Dominates TV Awards Shortlist

The Edinburgh College of Art dominates the shortlist of a student awards competition being run by the Scotland division of the Royal Television Society.

The ECA filmmakers have five nominations in the three categories, including all three in animation. The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS) – previously known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama - has two nominations, both in the fiction section, while the University of Stirling and the City of Glasgow College each have one, in the factual category.

The winners will be unveiled at a ceremony at BBC Scotland's Pacific Quay HQ in Glasgow, on the seventh of next month.

Say the organisers: “These are the pre-eminent awards for emerging student talent in television across Scotland.”

The shortlist reads:

Animation

Etude – Anna Leszczynska (Edinburgh College of Art)

The Making of Longbird – William Anderson (Edinburgh College of Art)

The Golden Bird – Catriona Bruce (Edinburgh College of Art)

Factual

Behind the Eyes of Ashleigh – Rebekah Clark (City of Glasgow College)

A Bunch of Gentlemen – Louise Begbie and others (University of Stirling)

Jim and May – Shaun Glowa (Edinburgh College of Art)

Fiction

Momo – Ben Mckinstrie (Edinburgh College of Art)

My First Spellbook – Gavin Laing and others (RCS)

The Taxidermist – Charlotte Carden and others (RCS)

The Scottish winners automatically go forward to an UK-wide version of the awards.

In a statement, Henry Eagles, chair of RTS Scotland, is quoted, as saying: “The quality of this year’s entries proves once again that Scotland’s colleges and universities are doing great work in their creative industries departments. This is probably the best set of entries we’ve had for many years – a brilliant showcase for young Scottish talent.

“And the ceremony provides an ideal opportunity to see these outstanding programmes, to meet the nominees and to discuss their work.”

Tickets for the awards ceremony – beginning at 6.30pm – cost £5. For more information, email creativeindustries@cityofglasgowcollege.ac.uk
