Alasdair Gray, one of Scotland’s best known writers and artists, has donated a print currently on show at the Henderson Gallery to the new pyjamas campaign.
The print, ‘From an Eastern Empire’, was created in 2006 and is number 90 of a limited edition of 90. It is being sold by silent auction to the highest bidder and all proceeds will be donated to the new pyjamas campaign for Scotland’s new Sick Kids hospital to be built in Edinburgh in 2013.
Alasdair Gray said of his donation: ‘Since the Government is giving less and less help to our public health services in order to boost the wealth of the professional classes to which I belong, it is not hard for us to give a little to help sick children.’
Bids may be left at the Henderson Gallery website www.hendersonsofedinburgh.co.uk The closing date is 12 noon on Saturday 9 January 2010.
‘From an Eastern Empire’ is currently on view at the Henderson Gallery annual Christmas Show, Wise Men and Angels. The exhibition features work by some of Scotland’s leading artists, sculptors, jewellers, ceramicists and printmakers from the 18th century to date.
The Henderson Gallery will donate 25% of the commission they earn from Wise Men and Angels to the new pyjamas campaign as well as 25% from the sale of their own Christmas cards.
Juliet Henderson, Curator of Wise Men and Angels, says: ‘This is only the beginning of Henderson’s support for the new pyjamas campaign. In the New Year we will announce a substantial donation programme for the next three years.’
Henderson's has been hailed by 'Scotland the Best' as a Scottish Pioneer, a groundbreaking business that changed the nation forever. In 1962, Henderson’s was the first vegetarian restaurant to open in Scotland, providing an outlet for the produce of Janet and Mac Henderson's East Lothian farm.
Elaine McGonigle, Director of the new pyjamas campaign, says: ‘We are delighted that the new pyjamas campaign is to benefit from the sale of this beautiful print – and we are sure that the competition will be keen. Already there has been significant interest and we are sure that this will increase as we near the closing date.
‘Alasdair Gray and Henderson’s understand how important the new hospital is to children from all over Scotland – this exhibition and the gift from Alasdair will certainly make a difference to them.’
