Return to Music Industry Roots as Hillside Wins South by South West Creative Work

Edinburgh-based Hillside Agency have won a Scottish Arts Council pitch to design graphics and publicity materials for the 2010 South by South West Festival held in Texas. The Leith-based studio will design the image for the Scottish showcases at the festival, which is globally recognised as the music industry’s most important annual gathering for ‘next big thing’ artists. Sixteen bands and leading industry figures will represent Scotland’s talented and energetic music industry in Austin, Texas in March.
Hillside have a long track record in both music and events – founder Neil Dalgleish was responsible for setting up acclaimed music publications Cut and TLN in the 80s and 90s, and early clients included many of the main players in the Scottish music industry at the time. More recently Hillside have retained the Fopp design account for the last 15 years, with the music and entertainment retail brand now owned by HMV.
Hillside also have unrivalled experience of the Scottish events industry, and recently completed the creative work for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and Edinburgh’s Christmas festivals. Significantly, they are responsible for the design output from the Scottish Government’s national events agency, EventScotland.
“I started out designing Scottish gig posters in the mid-80s so music’s always been a big part of what we do,” said Neil Dalgleish. “Our first record sleeves were top ten singles and number one albums for Deacon Blue. We’re so pleased to be able to make a contribution to Scotland’s presence at South by South West. I’ve always been a huge supporter of the Scottish music industry, and it’s brilliant to still be involved, especially as there are so many good new bands around just now.”
Stuart Thomas of the Scottish Arts Council said: “We are delighted to be working with Hillside on developing our promotional materials for SXSW. We felt that they really understood what we needed and offered us not one but a number of striking visual identities.”
