Reliance Officer Honoured for Taking on Two Raiders

A Reliance Security officer landed a top bravery award for tackling not one, but TWO raiders he caught breaking into the warehouse he was patrolling.

Moses Afolaranmi’s courage won him the Outstanding Act award in the Scottish round of the British Security Industry Association Security Personnel Awards.

Moses 39, (pictured left) has worked for Reliance Security for three years. He was on duty at Internacionale in Sighthill, Glasgow when he spotted an intruder who had broken into the warehouse complex. He grabbed the man and wrestled him to the ground, but then a second intruder appeared and tried to free his accomplice.

Despite being outnumbered Moses managed to detain them both and call for assistance.

Before the police arrived the two men broke free and fled, but Moses seized a pair of gloves, a balaclava and a shoe from one of them as he struggled free.

Police were later able to trace the raiders from DNA samples on the clothing.

Moses who lives in Glasgow said: “I am really proud to have won the award, although I was only doing my job.

“Looking back I realise I could have been in a spot of bother tackling two raiders at the same time. But I was so concerned with catching them that I didn’t give my own safety a thought.”

Reliance Security’s Area Operations Manager Scotland and Cumbria, Grainne Kelly said: “Moses' actions went above and beyond the call of duty, and he richly deserves his award.

“He was not required to catch the intruders but simply deter them. Moses works every weekend nightshift on this particular site and his courageous action is typical of his consistently excellent level of service.”

Alan Don, Head of Loss Prevention at Internacionale Retail said: “Moses' actions were beyond my expectations of what was required and his vigilance meant that our losses in this incident were nominal.

“I have told Reliance how impressed I am with the excellent work he does. He is a credit to his company.”

The BSIA's Security Personnel Awards are presented regionally throughout the UK. Moses will now go forward to the national finals in London in June.
