- Scottish travel group to operate own-brand package holidays and bridge the gap left by the demise of previous providers -
Following a £2million investment, Barrhead Travel, Scotland’s largest independent travel group, is set to launch its exclusive own-brand package holiday programme with the first flight scheduled to take-off tomorrow.
Barrhead Travel’s new initiative will see it become the first travel agent in Scotland to provide an exclusive own-brand package holiday service.
Launching the scheme with a flight from Glasgow to Palma tomorrow, the travel group’s holiday programme will serve popular sunspots in Majorca and mainland Spain throughout summer 2010. The company are optimistic that success will lead to an expansion of the service in the next few years and is already planning to add another 6 destinations to the programme which will include flights from other Scottish airports like Aberdeen.
During the initial 5 month period, Barrhead Travel expects to provide holidays for thousands of passengers with its own-brand service set to boost holiday capacity after the recent collapse of several low-cost providers including Globespan and Seguro.
Barrhead Travel has exclusively chartered aircraft from the British Airways CityFlyer fleet which will operate weekly throughout the summer from Glasgow Airport. The programme will run from late May to mid September with flights to Palma, Majorca and Barcelona, Spain.
Sharon Munro, chief executive of Barrhead Travel, said: “As one of the UK's best-recognised travel brands, and one of its largest travel groups, the logical next step for Barrhead Travel was to develop its own package holiday programme.
“Our years of experience in the travel business have given us the knowledge needed to produce and package our own holidays. We know what our customers are looking for and we know that we've got a quality product that will appeal to them, at extremely competitive prices.
“All of the accommodation we are using in our Barrhead Travel package holidays is hand-picked to ensure quality, and we're offering all-inclusive holidays on our programme, so it's easy for our customers to budget. With our lower overheads and costs, and with our ability to cut out the conventional tour operator, we can pass our savings onto our customers.
“This is especially important for families travelling over the school holidays where price increases during the peak season can significantly impact the overall cost of a holiday.
“Most importantly, as every holiday we sell is fully financially protected, we can provide customers with the peace of mind of knowing that their hard-earned money is safe.”
Barrhead Travel's package holiday programme had been developed over a period of several months.
Sharon added: “We've planned this, painstakingly, for almost a year. Scotland has the demand for more direct, peak-season holiday packages, and with the recent sad demise of Flyglobespan and several other tour operators and airlines, the number of holidays available in 2010 will certainly be much lower than in previous years. Our summer programme will help to plug that gap.”
Amanda McMillan, Managing Director of Glasgow Airport, commented: “Barrhead Travel's decision to start their own holiday programme is great news for both the airport and Scottish holidaymakers as they are a strong brand with a track record of providing quality value and service.
“Spain remains the most popular holiday destination for Scottish families and with these flights also serving the Mediterranean cruise market, I am confident they will be a great success.
“With many holidaymakers increasingly looking for peace of mind when they book a holiday, Barrhead Travel's strong position in the marketplace, and their partnership with British Airways, offers that peace of mind.
“We look forward to working closely with Barrhead Travel to develop their programme at Glasgow Airport.”
