Sixty Organisations Shares

The Scottish Arts Council has committed almost £16 million to 60 of the country’s leading arts organisations for two years, beginning in April 2011.

Over 130 organisations applied for awards to present a body of creative work of high quality, the majority of which will be developed or produced in Scotland.  Awards of between £50,000 and £300,000 were given to organisations across Scotland to create work to be celebrated at home and beyond.

This group of flexible organisations are committed to a strong artistic vision and inspiring public engagement, both of which were essential to securing an award. Successful organisations include:

Fire Exit                                              Red Note Ensemble

Vox Motus                                          Sound

Solar Bear                                          Edinburgh Mela

Indepen-dance                                   Lung Ha’s

Many of the successful organisations work across borders and continents and are in demand internationally, including NVA, New Moves International, Vanishing Point and Visible Fictions.

Morag Arnot, Acting Chief Executive, Scottish Arts Council said:

‘Every organisation which applied for a flexible award presented an ambitious creative vision for Scotland. The 60 successful organisations are leaders in the development and presentation of excellent work, and collectively will draw in audiences across Scotland.

‘Today’s announcement also celebrates those organisations that delight audiences through  the calibre of artists they invite into Scotland, organisations such as Moniack Mhor, Cove Park  or Celtic Connections, now joined by StAnza as a crucible for live poetry.

‘The freedom to push creative boundaries, develop new collaborations or respond to the demands and challenges of audiences requires the confidence that a period of stability offers. Our aim is that these flexible awards encourage and support a further bloom of creative growth amongst Scotland’s artistic communities.’

Andrew Dixon, Chief Executive Designate, Creative Scotland added:

“Creative Scotland will inherit a robust set of decisions from the Scottish Arts Council. Creative Scotland will want to lookstrategically at some areas such as the Traditional Arts that might benefit from a different style of investment from the new agency and there are some regional issues which may also need a separate approach.”

Consistent work of excellent quality was exemplified by organisations such as Deveron Arts, Catherine Wheels, Hebrides Ensemble, Common Guild and David Hughes Dance Productions, alongside the international profile of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, or the frontiers of performance that New Moves International is feted for.

A total of £22 million was requested by 89 applying organisations following an initial assessment – the total flexible budget available was £16 million.  In addition to artistic leadership and public engagement, business plans demonstrate sustainability, sound management and strong partnerships.  Each application was considered by both a panel of senior staff and a range of external expertise.
