Mobile logistics system developer Spartan Solutions Ltd, which specialises in barcode and RFID technology, has won a new deal worth more than £300,000 with the world's largest supplier of commercial aeroplane assemblies and components, Spirit AeroSystems.
Spartan has rolled-out a new system at Spirit's European operation based at Prestwick Airport, near Glasgow, which marries its goods received and invoicing systems – improving efficiency and reducing costs.
Spartan Solutions developed its “Phalanx” software to complement existing ERP and purchasing systems in the energy sector, and it is now used in logistics operations by major companies worldwide.
The system will manage goods receipts for Spirit Europe’s major programmes including the high volume Airbus A320 family of aircraft, the Airbus A380 Super-jumbo jets, as well as Boeing 777, 767 and 747-8 aircraft.
Received equipment and associated supplier paperwork is tagged with a barcode or radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip which, when scanned by a Phalanx enabled mobile device used by warehouse or logistics staff, confirms the received equipment matches the actual supplier order in the Spirit SAP system.
Once received goods have been processed the Spirit finance team simply barcode scan the associated supplier invoice to automatically match against the Spirit purchase order.
Jim Green, managing director of Spartan Solutions, says: “This major contract is a breakthrough for Spartan and our Phalanx solution into the aerospace market.
“Equipment management presents its own unique set of challenges, particularly in businesses that process huge volumes of components such as aerospace. The Phalanx system transforms Spirit’s internal processes by removing paperwork and manual processing.
“Phalanx enables Spirit to reduce their goods receipt time, minimise stockholding, increase efficiency, improve key supplier relationships and eliminate expensive manual error.”
Under the deal, Spartan Solutions has supplied Spirit with hand-held mobile devices running Phalanx, which is fully integrated with the aerospace specialist's SAP implementation. Spartan is also providing ongoing support and maintenance for the system.
Scott McLarty, Spirit Europe Operations and HR director, says: “Spartan Solutions has delivered a very important project for us by streamlining what is a necessarily complex logistics and invoicing process.
“We have an extended global network and supply chain, and it is imperative that we control our supply procedures and minimise our inventory holdings.
“The technology Spartan has developed helps us manage our transactions and working capital more effectively, which enables us to stay at the forefront of supply chain management best practice.
“Spartan delivered an IT project that was on time, within budget”
Phalanx delivers easy-to-use operational processes using mobile technology, barcodes and RFID to reduce operating costs while improving contract profitability.
Spartan Solutions' client list includes major oil and gas service providers such as Aggreko, Swire Oilfield Services and Aker Solutions.
