Renfrewshire Attracts the Best…

80 members from Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce were captivated by guest speaker and arguably one of Scotland’s most successful business men, Jim McColl OBE at the September Networking Lunch held at The Glynhill Hotel.

Jim shared his views on many aspects of business, such as his success has been down to amongst other things, “common sense”. He also commented that for Scottish businesses to be more successful on the international stage the banks need to be fairer when it comes to additional fees for covenants and bond charges. Quite often these charges wipe out any margins that companies make. The government and the banks should not be penalising companies that wish to expand and be competitive abroad.

In return for speaking to the members, the Chamber are making a donation to a local Renfrewshire project support by Enlight – a charitable organisation that Jim is involved in via his role in the Entrepreneurial Exchange. Enlight was established to help change the outcomes for looked after and accommodated children.

The regular monthly networking lunches held at various venues across Renfrewshire ran by the Chamber are always well attended. Commenting on why the lunches are so popular, Chief Exec’ Bob Davidson said that “…we attract on average over 50 guests per lunch every month. We work hard to get great speakers like Jim McColl and Sir Tom Farmer who is speaking at the end of November. The strong attendance says to me a number of things 1) the events are good, otherwise people wouldn’t come back 2) Renfrewshire is a great place to do business, and  3) businesses want to learn, improve and benefit from the experience of others, i.e. do business better.”

Chamber President Tom Johnston, who is Head of Retail for Colliers International, runs a tight ship at each lunch ensuring a good balance of listening to a good speaker, taking questions from the members and maximising the networking opportunities – and himself is a great networker, meeting as many members as he can at every event.
