People have only one more chance to see Saami ‘joikers’, who featured in Joanna Lumley’s recent ‘Northern Lights’ BBC programme.
Ante Mikkel and his daughter, Inger-Biret Gaup peformed to a full house last night at the Northern Streams festival in Edinburgh, along with storyteller, Claire Hewitt and Norwegian/Gaelic band – Samling.
The Gaup family perform one last time in Scotland, in Glasgow on Sunday. They are joined on the bill with flautist, Calum Stewart, a BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician finalist, and Daniel Carlsson, saxophonist from Sweden – accompanied by Heikki Borgault on guitar.
Northern Streams Organiser, Fiona Campbell, said “I’m really pleased so many people have been able to enjoy the amazing experiences of Saami joiking and insight into their way of life and view of the world. Last night’s audience were entranced by Ante Mikkel’s ‘day in the life of…’. I would urge people don’t miss this last chance to see these very talented performers – including the young trio we have playing in Glasgow tomorrow night – you won’t regret it!”
Northern Streams 2009 has had the most ambitious programme of workshops and concerts yet taking place in Edinburgh, Hawick, Dundee, Stirling, Glasgow and Newcastle between 1-5 April. Details at www.eltmsa.org.uk.
