Walkers Needed for Skye and Cuillins Mountain Challenge

Marie Curie Cancer Care (Highland) is urging avid walkers to take part in the Skye and Cuillins Mountain Challenge on 3rd July 2010. The 10 mile trek will take walkers over remote rugged footpaths through the heart of the Island, with stunning seascapes and the unrivalled grandeur of the Cuillins all around.

The Challenge aims to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care to help Nurses care for terminally ill people in their own homes. Marie Curie’s fundraising team is aiming to attract around 50 participants for the trek.

This low level hill walk from Kirkibost to Sligachan, via Camasunary presents a perfect opportunity to admire the breathtaking scenery of the Scottish Highlands and marvel at the wonders hidden within Skye.

Marie Curie Community Fundraiser Vonnie Carson said: “The Skye and Cuillins Mountain Challenge is a brand new trek for Marie Curie. It’s a fantastic opportunity to walk across one of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes, while at the same time raising funds to help terminally ill patients choose where they spend their final days. We hope the adventure and thrill of this new challenge will inspire people to take part and raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care.”

Anne Gillies from Raasay, a trek participant, said: “Marie Curie is a very special charity helping many people, not just those with terminal illness but their families as well.  It is so important that these services are available in rural areas like Skye as well as the big towns.  I did the Marie Curie walk on Raasay last year so I’m looking forward to the challenge of the walk through the Cuillins in July.  I really hope that other locals will sign up, join the team and support our community nurses in making this event a success.  Don’t wait till the last minute – sign up now!”

Registration costs just £10 and participants are asked to raise a minimum of £100 in sponsorship.  Walkers can either register individually or come along with friends and family as part of a group.

There’s still time to sign up for this challenge of a lifetime and raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Would-be adventurers can find out more by visiting www.mariecurie.org.uk/events  calling 08700 340 040 or Vonnie on 01463 238328.
