St John’s Shopping Centre has put out an urgent appeal for local running enthusiasts to help them out with a charity fitness challenge taking place later this month.
Local businessman and personal trainer Steve Bonthrone had been scheduled to take on a solo run in St John’s Shopping Centre on Thursday 30th September in a bid to raise vital funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. However has just returned to training following a back injury which has rendered him unable to run the full challenge alone. He’s now appealing for fellow running enthusiasts to help him complete the 24 mile distance.
Steven commented, “I’m really disappointed that I cannot take on the full challenge at the end of the month but I have been advised not to run further than 6 miles so I don’t put more strain on the injury than is can sustain. But I’m certain there are keen and fit runners in the Perthshire area who’ll be happy to join me in this challenge.”
The challenge, which is set to start at 10am on Thursday 30th September was to see Steven running the full 24 mile distance from Macmillan Cancer Support’s offices in Dundee to the brand new palliative care unit at PRI on the final day of the campaign “30 Days to Mac a Difference”. It is the final event of three sporting challenges which will be held in the shopping centre including a virtual Etape Caledonia cycling event and a virtual Ben Nevis climbing challenge.
The team at St John’s Shopping Centre are already several days into their month long fundraising campaign which lasts the whole of September, with a goal of raising over £10,000 for the national charity Macmillan Cancer Support. To date they have already counted over £3500 into the coffers of the charity through a variety of activities including a dedicated charity shop, raffle ticket sales and a flag day held in the shopping centre.
Siobhan McConnell, centre manager, commented “We were terribly sorry to hear that Steven injured himself, although glad to hear he is on the mend and delighted he’s still able to take part. We very much hope that local running enthusiasts will be able to come forward and help us out for such a worthy cause.”
