Pitlochry Launches Dazzling Winter Light Display

An inspirational Winter Light Display will be launched this weekend by The Pitlochry Lighting Committee, part of the Highland Perthshire Community Interest Company. The social enterprise, which is also behind the management of this year’s Enchanted Forest, wanted to brighten up the town centre from October through to March 2011. With 20,000 visitors expected to descend on the town for this year’s Enchanted Forest event, the launch couldn’t be more timely.
The illumination of over 60 individual lights will take place in front of first night crowds assembling for The Enchanted Forest, and will be handled by local actors Deirdre Davis, of River City fame, and Martyn James, a weel kent face on Perthshire’s stage.
The Winter Lighting scheme, made possible with funding from LEADER Rural Tayside and Perth & Kinross Council, and buoyed by donations from local businesses, will complement other events that are going on in the area including Perthshire Amber, Wild Connections and the Fire & Ice Festival at Kenmore.
The lighting display will illuminate key sections of the town as well as its main thoroughfares and, it is hoped, create a bit of sparkle in the minds of visitors to the town over this winter until March next year.
The Winter Light display enhances a growing vibrancy in the Highland Perthshire area for events and activities throughout the Autumn and Winter months. This year, for example, Pitlochry Festival Theatre will open for the first time during the winter with a 5 week run of the traditional pantomime Cinderella.
Alastair McMennemie, chair of the Pitlochry Lighting Committee who secured the funding, commented “We are really delighted that LEADER Rural Tayside, Perth & Kinross Council and local businesses have financially supported this project which has seen a significant investment in how the town will look to the tens of thousands of visitors who are due to visit this Winter. “
“Pitlochry has always been a hub for tourists during the summer months, with multi-award winning floral displays to please the crowds. Increasingly we have a strong offering of events and activities now taking place in the Autumn and Winter months that attract many people from all over the country and, indeed internationally. It was felt that enhancing the town’s appearance during these times was just as important.” He concluded.
The light switch on will take place outside Fishers Hotel at 6.30pm on Friday 22nd October.
