Call of Duty: Black Ops – the sensational new 18-rated commando game from Activision, which is predicted to become the fastest and biggest-selling title in games history, has been launched in spectacular fashion with midnight openings around the country attended by thousands of gamer fans.
Leading entertainment and games retailer HMV opened over 100 of its stores around the UK and Ireland at midnight last night (Tues 9 Nov 00.01 hrs), including regional flagships in London's Oxford Street, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Newcastle, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast & Dublin, with large queues forming outside despite the wintry weather.
Some of the queues began forming a full twelve hours earlier in the day, and among the first fans to begin queuing was student Imran Chowdhury of Manor Park, East London, who arrived at HMV 150 Oxford Street at mid-day (8 Nov) for the midnight opening. (see attached photo).
HMV is supporting Call of Duty: Black Ops with a strong price and trade-in offer, that will see the game on XBox360 and PS3 platforms priced just £7.99 when purchased with a Medal of Honor trade-in – a deal which ends 15 Nov.
HMV's games flagship at 150 Oxford Street, London additionally hosted a range of promotional launch activity featuring promo characters, while it also made a limited quantity of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition available to purchase on the night. Additionally, the first 200 customers in the queue who purchased the game received a free copy of the official strategy guide book, while the first 500 customers received a free t-shirt and midnight opening bag, and were also entered into a free draw to win a copy of the Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition.
HMV's Head of Games, Tim Ellis, comments: “Call of Duty: Black Ops is all set to challenge last year's phenomenon Modern Warfare 2 to become the fastest and biggest-selling title in games history. Well over 1 million sales are predicted for its first week alone, and with Christmas coming up and more people now owning a console than ever before, we expect it to go on to become not just the most popular game ever, but an iconic release that will take gaming on to a new level.
“HMV has taken huge pre-orders online at hmv.com for Call of Duty: Black Ops, including for the exclusive Prestige limited edition, and well over 100 of our stores around the country opened at midnight to give core gamers the earliest possible opportunity to get hold of the game and start playing it with their mates.”
