Bell Ingram Drives Promotion of Farming and Countryside Issues

Bell Ingram sponsored the Scottish Land and Estates first Annual General Meeting this year as part of a drive to promote farming and countryside issues.

The rural land management firm supported the meeting which focused on the challenges facing the rural economy as it seeks to emerge stronger and fitter following the recession.

Mark Mitchell, Director at Bell Ingram’s Perth office said: “We were delighted to have the opportunity to support SLE as many of our clients are members.

“This event provided an excellent vehicle for us to help demonstrate that SLE’s members’ issues are also our issues.”

The Scottish Land and Estates membership organisation launched last year to represent the interests of Scottish landowners, farmers and rural businesses.

Bell Ingram joined Alex Salmond, who attended as key note speaker to announce the Scottish Government’s commitment to support the organisations proposal for a young apprentice scheme with a specific focus on rural employment.

As well as promoting best practice and providing training opportunities for its members, SLE also plays a key role in lobbying the Scottish Government in relation to issues affecting its members.

Mark adds: “As an independent consultancy, it isn’t always appropriate for us to operate within the political arena but we still must support our clients in responding to political agendas and decision-making which affect their land interests.”

Members also heard from Ross Macleod of the Wildlife Estates Scotland (WES) Initiative who presented the findings of the pilot phase of the WES accreditation project and outlined the organisation’s plans to develop a second level of certification.

Recent legislation makes landowners vicariously liable for activities that take place on their properties and the WES Initiative has a vital role to play in helping farmers and landowners to demonstrate the measures they have taken to manage any potential health and safety risks.
