For Paul Archibald qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) and Hall Morrice has helped shape his career path. The Robert Gordon University graduate joined Hall Morrice’s Aberdeen team in 2009 to complete his chartered accountant training and he has recently been promoted into a managerial position within the company. The chartered accountancy practice, which also has offices in Fraserburgh, offers the ICAS training course to graduates who wish to qualify as a CA. Through Hall Morrice the trainees gain the relevant knowledge and hands on experience required to pass the final exams and qualify.
Audit and Accounts manager, Paul Archibald, undertook his CA training at Hall Morrice after completing his university placement there. He says, “Studying for the CA qualification was hard work as there was a lot to take in. However, there was always the opportunity to ask for help and advice both within Hall Morrice and at the classes I attended. Being able to work at a company like Hall Morrice during my training was a great way to develop my practical and theoretical knowledge and I have gained a wide range of experience which is still relevant in my current role.
“The CA qualification is not just another academic qualification. It provides you with a solid foundation of all aspects of business and financial management.”
Paul added that he believes taking part in the ICAS scheme was vital in helping him to progress his career. He says, “ICAS is seen by employers as a respected qualification to have as they know how much hard work you have put in and that you have been through a tough exam process. Having a recognised affiliation like the CA qualification also gains you respect from clients and proves that you are capable of handling their requirements.”
Around 3000 people are currently undertaking their CA training through ICAS. All ICAS members must undertake a minimum of three years training, pass rigorous examinations and are required to undertake mandatory continuous professional development. 47% of members are based outside of Scotland with some based as far a field as Australia.
Hall Morrice Partner Shonagh Fraser says, “The global accountancy market was worth £183.6 billion in 2010, so there has never been a better time to train as a CA. We are committed to looking for the best candidates to join our team and many of the people who undertake their CA training with us stay on and progress their careers within our company. As our business continues to grow so does our team of professionals and it is great that that we can continue to offer support and accountancy expertise to the talented graduates who join us.”
