THORPE Molloy Recruitment Ltd is celebrating its 15th anniversary by enjoying a marked increase in growth.
Since it was founded in 1997, as a two-woman Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust-backed start-up business, the company has grown to employ over 40 staff, adding 4 new roles in the last 12 months and enjoying a rise in turnover of 20 per cent to £12 million.
Reflecting on a challenging year, managing director, Amanda McCulloch, said: “Our increased turnover is the result of our oil and gas clients returning to hiring mode over the previous 12 months. In 2011, we also added to our portfolio when we responded to demand from clients to provide recruitment services for the professional disciplines of commercial contracts, supply chain, sales and marketing. These areas are now among our fastest growing revenue streams.
“An exciting new development for the business is our decision to extend our services into IT recruitment. Our market research has shown that now is the ideal time to invest in this area because of the lack of effective routes for employers to access IT professionals in Aberdeen.”
During the year, the company also made investments for the long term, implementing a new database system, upgrading IT infrastructure, rolling out new internal training programmes and, as a result of internal promotions and new role creation, hiring eight graduates.
Amanda explains: “Graduates are a tremendously talented resource which employers sometimes overlook because they lack experience. We choose to hire graduates because they inject enthusiasm and fresh ideas, and are usually keen to establish themselves quickly, making a visible contribution within a short period of time. I joined the company as a graduate and so did many of our other members of staff who now have management and development responsibility, including our team leaders in temp finance, commercial and office personnel. When graduates join us, they can see from their peers that professional recruitment is a great career choice.”
Recently promoted, Laura Ross, a senior consultant in the temporary finance team, comments: “I joined Thorpe Molloy Recruitment straight from university and immediately enjoyed the fast-paced, performance driven environment. Working in a small business I’ve gained responsibility quickly and in addition to my core recruitment work I’ve added value to business support and socially responsible initiatives. Although I didn’t consider recruitment while at university, I can’t imagine working in any other profession now.”
Kris Lynch, the senior consultant with business development responsibility for the new IT specialism agrees: “Joining Thorpe Molloy Recruitment gave me the opportunity to pursue my personal ambition to become an IT recruiter. I developed my skills in an established division of the business but have now been given the opportunity to diversify on my own.”
Amanda concludes: “Looking ahead to 2013, we anticipate that the market will remain buoyant and extremely competitive. We’ll remain focused on growth across our specialisms, from our new specialism, IT, through to our market leading position in accountancy and finance recruitment.”
