It was a speech by Andrew Gilligan, at least three years ago, that marked the end of the McMedia dining club – run by allmediascotland and comprising media folk taking over a restaurant for an evening and enjoying the company of a guest speaker (others included Matthew Parris, Iain Macwhirter, Charlie Whelan, George Rosie, Neal Ascherson and Lesley Riddoch).
Question is: Is there a demand for it to be resurrected, with or without a guest speaker? Say once every four-to-six weeks?
In the meantime, it is also being suggested that – starting off in Edinburgh – a hostelry be identified that becomes the informal Friday evening drinking haunt for local and visiting media folk. In other words, the sort of place where friends past and present might bump into each other, where visiting journalists might head for in the reasonably certain knowledge of striking up a conversation with a colleague. But where? And starting when?
