Red Alert Sounded on Equal Pay Campaign

Wearing red may be a common way to lift the look of TV news readers, but today, in particular, it has taken on an additional significance.

To celebrate a campaign for equal pay between men and women, the call has gone out for women to show their support by today wearing something red.

Says the National Union of Journalists, women working full-time in the UK are still paid on average 16.4 per cent less per hour than men.

In other words, the full-time pay gap between women and men is equivalent to men being paid all the year round while women work for free after November 2.

The appeal that women wear red today is to symbolise that they are 'in the red' between now and the end of the year.
