Sorry to be the bearer of gloomy opinion, but this rumour about a nationalist paper being launched to compete against the Herald and Scotsman doesn’t work for me.
If you missed it in Sunday’s Observer, then you might have picked it up in yesterday’s Times. In essence, you take a familiar SNP business name – in this case, Brian Soutar – and suggest he wants a paper that excitedly reports every whim of Alex Salmond.
The problems with this story are many, and if I miss one, feel free to comment at the end of the article. Talk of a nationalist newspaper isn’t new. It cropped up in the mid-1990s when it was alleged a group of pro-Nat businessmen (probably including Brian Soutar) wanted to buy the Herald. So this story has form.
It reflects a genuine problem, that our printed media is skewed towards the Union.
