Staff at The Scotsman canteen are facing redundancy, following a decision to reduce its opening hours, to the extent that staff working on the backshift will have no canteen provision at all.
As a sign of these economically-strapped times, the canteen at the paper’s HQ – which is also home to Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News – will close at 2.30pm, Monday to Friday, and 2pm on a Saturday. It will not be open at all on a Sunday.
As one insider said: “It’s not The Herald, but….”
The canteen provides meals at a discount, subsidised by the company, but allmediascotland understands the choice on offer, during the shorter opening hours, will be reduced.
The canteen is said to be less busy from 2.30pm, with little demand at all for meals on a Sunday. There are vending machines in the building, but few food outlets nearby.
