High Court Date Set for Journalist Deportation Hearing

A journalist who has been living in Glasgow for the last six years is to appear before a judge at the High Court in London in his latest bid to fight deportation to his native Cameroon.

Charles Atangana, who fled to the UK after being detained and beaten in his homeland, is seeking a judicial review into a decision to deport him.

The High Court appearance is scheduled for the seventh of next month, at which members of the National Union of Journalists – which has been campaigning on his behalf – and other trade unionists will stage a demonstration in support of his appeal.

Last month, the NUJ campaigned successfully to win Charles’s release from detention at the Dover immigration removal centre.

Says the NUJ, since then Charles has been moved around different hostels in London waiting for the judicial review to decide his fate.

Among other things in Glasgow, he has been a volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau.

The NUJ campaign is being staged because of fears for Charles' safety – his family is said to be associated with opposition movement.
