Five Take Heart from Latest Sales Figures

A quintet of newspapers have each enjoyed an increase in their sales in Scotland over the twelve months between September last year and last month.

Says the Audit Bureau of Circulation, the Scottish Daily Express, the Scottish Daily Mail, the Independent, the Scottish Mail on Sunday and the Financial Times each enjoyed year-on-year sales increases in Scotland of 4.2 per cent, 1.2 per cent, 7.8 per cent, 3.1 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively. All but the FT had enjoyed August-to-August increases also.

The figures read, across the board, as follows:

Scottish Daily Mirror (25,489 in September 2010 versus 27,070 in September 2009, down 1581 or 5.8 per cent), Daily Record (294,250 versus 311,508, down 17,258 or 5.5 per cent), Daily Star of Scotland (86,167 versus 88,134, down 1967 or 2.2 per cent), Scottish Sun (339,586 versus 361,244, down 21,658 or six per cent), and Scottish Daily Express (72,754 versus 69,802 up 2952 or 4.2 per cent).

Scottish Daily Mail (115,940 versus 117,429 up 1489 or 1.2 per cent), Daily Telegraph (21,657 versus 23,657, down 2073 or 8.7 per cent), Financial Times (3081 versus 3077, up four or 0.12 per cent), The Herald (53,122 versus 56,799, down 3677 or 6.5 per cent), The Guardian (14,403 versus 15,432, down 1047 or 6.8 per cent), and The Independent (8147 versus 7556, up 591 or 7.8 per cent).

The Scotsman (42,425 versus 46,510, down 4085 or 8.8 per cent), The Times (22,929 versus 26,350, down 3421 or 13 per cent), Daily Star of Scotland – Sunday (36,184 versus 39,369, down 3158 or eight per cent), Scottish News of the World (267,950 versus 305,758, down 37,808 or 12.4 per cent), and Sunday Mail (356,313 versus 380,581, down 24,268 or 6.4 per cent).

Scottish Sunday Mirror (22,571 versus 23,447 down 876 or 3.7 per cent), The People (14,353 versus 15,500, down 1147 or 7.4 per cent), Scottish Sunday Express (36,184 versus 39,369, down 3185 or 8.1 per cent), Sunday Post (225,013 versus 237,355, down 12,342 or 5.2 per cent), and Scottish Mail on Sunday (99,796 versus 96,761, up 3035 or 3.13 per cent).

Independent on Sunday (6255 versus 6282, down 27 or 0.4 per cent), The Observer (18,7862 versus 21,034, down 2272 or 10.8 per cent), Scotland on Sunday (53,267 versus 56,514, down 3247 or 5.7 per cent) and Sunday Herald (42,601 versus 42,665, down 64 or 0.15 per cent).

Sunday Telegraph (18,610 versus 20,011, down 1401 or seven per cent) and Sunday Times Scotland (61,817 versus 68,610, down 6793 or 9.9 per cent).
