Macwhirter and Edwards to Talk Newspaper Ethics

Two of the best-known journalists on the Sunday Herald are to take part in a debate on newspaper ethics, in light of the Leveson Inquiry into press standards.

Iain Macwhirter and Rob Edwards are to speak at a meeting of the Edinburgh Freelance branch of the National Union of Journalists.

The event, on the 20th of next month (venue and time tbc) will see columnist and commentator Macwhirter and environment writer Edwards discussing, among other issues, the ethical dimension of writing campaigning stories and the 'unregulated landscape' of Twitter and Facebook.

The branch is also hoping to host a visit from the NUJ's general-secretary, Michelle Stanistreet, who was due to speak to both it and Edinburgh and District branch towards the end of last year, before she had to postpone because of fog affecting flights.

That is set for March 12, with the venue and time also to be confirmed.

At the annual general meeting of the Edinburgh Freelance branch last night, the following were elected:

Chair: Joyce McMillan

Vice-chair: Thom Dibdin

Secretary: Mark Fisher

Membership secretary: Andy Moore

Treasurer: Joyce McMillan

Training: Kay Smith

Edinburgh Trade Union Council rep: Kay Smith
