Services have resumed along a Lake District stretch of the West Coast railway line closed by a high-speed train derailment just over a fortnight ago, during which a woman died.
The death of 84 year-old Margaret Masson, from Glasgow, was to prove an interesting challenge for every newspaper picture desk. Simply, there just didn’t seem to be a photograph of her, anywhere to be found.
Spike hears it even had the newly-installed editor of Scotland on Sunday, Les Snowdon, trying to track one down. Phoning the picture desk at his former paper, the Sunday Times Scotland, he suggested that his successor, Carlos Alba, had okayed the sharing of a Sunday Times’ pic of the woman. Except that there was no pic and no okay from Alba.
To which Snowdon is said to have mischievously replied that SoS will instead just have to use the one it had got – which of course it didn’t have either.
