It might have looked daft had Europe defeated the USA in golf’s Ryder Cup. But, as things turned out, the low-key coverage in some of the Scottish press – including the Sunday Mail coverage, which used Press Association copy – turned out to be remarkably prescient.
But Europe lost and so, perhaps, to have sent out dedicated reporters would have proved, with hindsight, an expensive error of judgment.
As one senior manager at the newspaper’s publishers remarked: There weren’t even any Scots involved.
