The general public appear to think press regulation could not be improved much more than it already operates, accordinf to a poll.
A survey, conducted by MORI about the work of the Press Complaints Commission not only found a high number of people are aware of the regulatory authority, its constitution – mostly lay members, a minority comprising editors – was four times the most favoured option against all others.
The majority of respondents also preferred a fast resolution to a complaint through a correction or apology to a system involving fines. Furthermore, they wanted complaints to be treated quickly, at no cost and indpendently. Says the PCC: “This chimes with the PCC’s motto of being fast, free and fair.”
