Shoppers are to get the chance to see young people from Scotland’s cadet forces in action.
Braehead Shopping Centre is hosting a mini Cadet Forces tattoo with a weekend of exciting activities and displays by members of the Sea Cadets, Army Cadet Force and the Air Cadets on April 17 and 18.
The free event at the Braehead mall and boardwalk along the banks of the River Clyde is being organised to mark Cadet 150 – a year-long celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Cadet Forces.
As well as free displays of Cadet Force activities there will also be a climbing wall, flight simulators, parades, boat races on the river and performances from the Royal Marines Band.
Founded in the 1850’s, the Cadet Forces movement is one of the oldest and most successful voluntary youth organisations in the world.
Today, there are 130,000 young people who are members of the three organisations, led by 25,000 adult volunteers in 3000 sites across the UK.Captain of Sea Cadets, Mark Windsor, Captain RN, said: “Visitors to the Cadet 150 event at Braehead will be inspired by the skills and expertise of our amazing young people who are members of the Sea, Army, Air and Combined Cadet forces.
“We aim to inspire other young people to get involved as we celebrate 150 years of our Cadet Forces. We also aim to celebrate the role young people play in supporting their local communities and the broader life skills including, leadership, teamwork, self-confidence and discipline that involvement brings.”
Braehead’s general manager, Peter Beagley said: “The cadets are certainly a force to be reckoned with and they do a fantastic job helping young people fulfil their potential.
“They also do a lot of work in the community and we’re delighted to give the young people from all the three cadet forces the chance to show everyone what they are made of.”
Braehead is one of Scotland’s biggest and most popular shopping centres with more than 100 stores and free parking for 6500 cars.
Along with Marks and Spencer’s Scottish flagship store, the mall is also home to the biggest New Look fashion store in the central belt and the first stand-alone Superdry.
Some of the big High Street names at Braehead include G-Star and men’s Italian fashion brand, 7camicie, Monsoon, River Island, HMV, Argos, Waterstone’s and a recently-expanded Republic.
