Charan Gill MBE, together with this year’s ‘honest lad and lass’, Robert
Slight and Louise Nish, dressed in traditional costume, will unveil two
refurbished function suites at the official re-launch party today
(06.09.07) for The Quay Complex at Fisherrow Harbour, Musselburgh.
The two suites have been named ‘Arthur’ and ‘Vass’ in honour of the honest
toun’s very first honest lad and lass, Jimmie Arthur and Ina Vass. And to
mark the special occasion, relatives of the first honest lad and lass will
be on hand to mark the occasion. Not only has Jimmie Arthur’s widow Nettie
Arthur been invited, but Ina Vass’s son, Douglas Naismith MP, and daughter
Wendy Hourston will be in attendance.
Mr Gill said, “It was only once I’d bought The Quay Complex in April that
I became aware of Musselburgh’s reputation as ‘the honest toun’ and its
annual honest lad and lass celebrations. As The Quay Complex belongs to
Musselburgh, I thought it would be a great idea to recognise the town’s
distinctive tradition by naming the suites after the first honest lad and
Today’s opening marks a remarkable turnaround in the fortunes of The Quay
Complex. It was last year when the Fisherrow and Musselburgh Co-operative
Society concluded that the complex was placing an unsustainable drain on
its resources and launched a nationwide search for a ‘white knight’ to
take over the facility and safeguard its future for the local community.
That search ended in April when Gill bought the complex for
