Next up is the KAISER CHIEFS, whose ‘Employment’ album has jumped 64 per cent in
sales, followed by PAUL WELLER’S ‘As Is Now’ with a 59 per cent increase. Weller is
also featured on two other chart albums this week – The Jam’s ‘Snap’ and his own
solo compilation, ‘Modern Classics’.
Other big hitters from the Brits are KT TUNSTALL, whose ‘Eye to the Telescope’ album
has seen a 45 per cent sales jump at HMV stores throughout the UK, and JACK JOHNSON
with ‘In Between Dreams’, an album that’s seen a 36 per cent rise in sales.
Indeed, HMV predict that no less than 11 of the Brits artists and winners will be
contesting the coveted UK Top 10 in next week’s chart.
The Brits effect is also evident on sales of music as a whole – during Brits week
there’s been a 24 per cent overall increase in album sales, which is nearly eight
per cent up on the corresponding period a year ago.
Says HMV’s Gennaro Castaldo: “The Brits effect keeps getting bigger every year.
Simply receiving a nomination can result in a significant sales lift for an artist,
but to really hit the big-time you need to win and, ideally, grab the headlines with
a show-stealing performance.
“Artist albums that have been ‘bubbling-under’ and selling well on the back of a
word-of-mouth buzz over the previous months also tend to see big lifts as a results
of being showcased to a wider, more mainstream audience.
“Kanye West, together with triple award winners the Kaiser Chiefs, British Female
Solo Artist, KT Tunstall, and International Breakthrough Artist, Jack Johnson, come
closest to ticking all these boxes and can thus be considered the biggest
beneficiaries of this year’s Brit Awards in commercial terms.”
