Drama and Dance students at the Highlands’ main arts venue have achieved a 100% pass rate in their recent SQA exams, in addition to the incredible achievement of every member of its Intermediate 2 Drama class being awarded an ‘A’ for their efforts.
Eden Court Theatre, which runs its SQA courses in conjunction with the Highland Council, is the only venue in the Highlands to offer a Higher Dance qualification, and one of the small number offering Higher and Intermediate 2 Drama. Its Dance students, one of whom has only ever taken dance classes with Eden Court, garnered two A’s, four B’s and two C’s; and the Higher Drama students achieved one A, thirteen B’s and seven C’s. Every student in the Intermediate 2 class, taught by Eden Court Arts Worker Islay MacRae, impressively managed to achieve an ‘A’.
The students come not only from the Highland region but from all over Scotland to study SQA courses at the theatre, with some travelling from as far as Edinburgh to attend. Many of them go on to further education to study and work in the performing arts.
Currently, Eden Court has 36 students enrolled for the 2011/12 year over the three classes. The courses are taught on Saturdays throughout the normal school term, and through week long intensives in the school holidays. As the courses are taught outside of regular school hours, the students are required to show exceptional commitment throughout the year – and this passion is always reflected in the quality of the results achieved.
The pupils are able to make use of the theatre’s state of the art studio spaces and participate in performances in the 260 seat OneTouch Theatre, bringing their shows to life with the support of the theatre’s technical team and its extensive prop and costume stores. One of last year’s successful students said of their time studying at Eden Court:
“I found that being in a class with those who shared the same passion as me helped raise my confidence, as did encouragement and belief from the tutors. Being allowed to perform on stage at the end of the course and taking charge of your plays' technical aspects gave the students a real feeling of what their future could be and aided their performances.”
Eden Court will be accepting applications for all of its SQA courses from March 2012 for the 2012/13 term. If you are interested in applying simply call Arts Education Assistant Kai Henderson on 01463 239841.
