Queryclick founder, Chris Liversidge, has offered his insight into the unveiling of a new Google Maps app exclusively available for Android users in the U.S.
The app has been introduced as a new feature for Google Maps 6.0 and allows floor plans to be added to Google Maps. This helps venue owners who have uploaded a floor plan of their building improve location accuracy.
Google Maps Floor Plan Marker directs users around their own building, collecting data about nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and phone masts as they go which helps visitors and customers quickly and easily orient themselves.
Chris Liversidge, founder of QueryClick, a leading full service search marketing agency said: “We’ve all been in the position when we enter an unfamiliar building and wonder aimlessly from floor to floor before eventually finding our destination.
“It's frustrating to say the least so the benefits are tremendous for Android users who have access to this app. When used in the few places that already have indoor maps, they will be able to see their own location with much greater precision.
“Customers will even be able to see which floor they’re on in buildings with multiple floors, and the map will automatically update to the right floor if they go up or down a level.
“Like all of Google’s first party apps, Floor Plan Marker is free, so if you’re regularly in locations that use the service, there’s no reason not to grab it. Managers of larger retail locations should also get on board and sign up for the service as it’s unbelievably simple to get your place of business up and running.”
Despite the obvious benefits the app will bring to businesses, questions have arisen surrounding possible security threats the Floor Plan Marker could pose.
Chris added: “So far the app is available only for those in the U.S and remarks have already been made suggesting that it could be manipulated by criminals.
“Although others have laughed off these claims, the tool was only launched this month so it’s impossible to say how it will be used in the coming months. It’s easy to understand where the concerns are coming from as businesses in dense cities like New York commonly share buildings with, or are in close proximity to residences.”
At the moment the app is still in Beta and limited to the Android platform but it is expected to become far-reaching for the commercial real estate industry and marketing property online.
Chris adds: “Overall the app has obvious benefits and although it is limited at the moment, it will undoubtedly develop to become more sophisticated and available in the mainstream market.”
