FOR its innovation in creating SURFSTONE™, Rearo, Scotland’s leading providers of laminated and solid surface materials, has been chosen as finalists in the Business Innovation category at the inaugural Scottish Family Business Awards 2012 which take place on Tuesday 4 December at the Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow.
This second generation, Govan-based business, which was founded by James Mercer in Shetland in the 1970s and today is led by his son, Graham, has been recognised at the awards for its inventiveness in creating a product which has revolutionised the domestic and commercial markets in kitchen and counter worktops.
Manufactured in one of Rearo’s two Glasgow factories, Surfstone is the last word in affordable luxury and was launched earlier this year to address a market which had previously been dominated by either very cheap or extremely expensive solutions.
As well as high levels of interest from homeowners, continual enquiries from the commercial sector has confirmed that Surfstone™ has a number of applications in that arena, including office reception areas and within the retail sector. The product’s seamless joints and hygienic qualities have also created interest from those involved in the renovation of medical facilities and dental surgeries.
Graham Mercer, MD of Rearo, comments: “We are extremely pleased to be chosen as finalists in these prestigious awards. We invested heavily in the development of Surfstone and are utterly delighted that the hard work has paid off handsomely in terms of the recognition we have received from customers in both the domestic and commercial sectors and now, from the Scottish Family Business Awards judging panel.”
Rearo currently employs around 100 people, working out of the Glasgow headquarters in Loanbank Quadrant, Govan, the Drumoyne Road factory, and across six trade counters throughout Scotland, England and Wales.
