The journalists at The Big Issue in Scotland magazine don’t know whether to laugh or cry: if only there was an established practice of giving credit where it’s due, when one media outlet reports a story that has already appeared somewhere else.
A growing sense of deja-vu is being felt at the magazine’s Glasgow HQ, whether it was on Thursday – with BBC Scotland’s Newsnight – or with Scotland on Sunday two weeks ago.
The Newsnight piece was about a powerline between Beauly and Denny – arguably hot on the heels of a piece in TBIS from three weeks’ previously.
The Scotland on Sunday story was about a cat stuck up a tree. But it was a tale with a twist: the cat looked so much like a rabbit, it had some experts believing it was a new species. The Big Issue had run the same story a month previously.
The next issue of the magazine is out on Thursday. Set your diaries. Says one of the reporters: “This week, we’ve got a great tale about the future of Dungavel Detention Centre. I expect that one will pop up somewhere else soon too.”
