Record Staff Memo Prompts Angry Reaction

The National Union of Journalists says it is determined to ensure a proposed work to rule of its members at the Daily Record and Sunday Mail goes head on Friday, despite what it considers to be “intimidation”, following a memo sent to staff by the papers’ managing director, Mark Hollinshead.

In the memo, Hollinshead says he is obliged to inform staff of four possible consequences of their action, including the threat of dismissal for breach of contract, although the definition of ‘work to rule’ would suggest no contract terms being broken.

But there are what are known as ‘implicit’ contractual obligations – when other members of staff (and their ‘contracts’) are affected by the actions of a colleague.

There is mention too that anyone involved in the action would render themselves ineligible for any profit share this year, which last year netted staff
